Colin Mair capped by Scotland.....at the age of 70!
Wednesday, 16 August 2023
Club legend Colin Mair has finally received the recognition he deserved on the rugby field by being retrospectively capped by Scotland at the ripe old age of 70!
Back in the day, the SRU didn't award caps for appearances in international fixtures against nations that they didn't feel were worthy of the honour. Colin's appearance for Scotland against Japan in Tokyo in 1977 was one such fixture. Not before time, this injustice has been rectified and yesterday it was announced that retrospective caps would be awarded for these fixtures.
Not only did Scotland record an emphatic 9 - 74 victory that day but the West man constributed 30 of those points with the boot (4 pens and 9 conversions) which by our statistician's count makes him the 5th highest Scottish points scorer in a match (behind Messrs Hastings (x2), Paterson and Townsend) and the highest in the 4 points for a try era.
Richly deserved 'Dobbin' and a great reward for your loyal service to West over many years. We can now get you up on the 'wall of fame' in the clubhouse....... and I promise we'll find a better photo!
